Join us on Zoom on Wednesday September 24 from 1-2 pm when environmental epidemiologist Joan Casey will talk with us about “America’s Coming Smoke Epidemic.” As described in a recent article in The Atlantic magazine, Joan and her colleagues use very large data sets to evaluate the short-, medium-, and long-term impacts of wildfire smoke on human health. It’s long been known that PM2.5 particles are particularly toxic, passing rapidly from the lungs into the bloodstream. But how long does it take for their effects to show up, and which illnesses are most likely to result? What are the compounding influences of co-exposure to extreme heat, power outages and stresses like job or home losses?
